Qualities: Demanding yet personable Controlling yet flexible Communicates openly and directly Loyal to the team Trusted Respected and respects others An effective leader would clearly explain what needs to be accomplished by their team members.

Attitudes of the Effective Leader
Views/Judges: Gives recognition and praise publicly Understands that strength is in the team, not in individual abilities Allows others to assume leadership role when indicated Promotes positive change EX: An effective leader recognizes that team members may possess artistic, technical, and/or knowledge as skills and uses these skills to accomplish team goals. EX: An effective leader would say “I believe in you!” “I trust you can do this!” 1.05 Understand concepts of teamwork

Autocratic Leader Often called “dictator” Makes all decisions Has difficulty delegating or sharing duties Emphasizes discipline Expects all to follow directions Causes fear of punishment from team EX: ER manager plans all the work schedules and is extremely strict. 1.05 Understand concepts of teamwork

Democratic Leader Guides Listens to the opinions of others Encourages participation of all team members in decisions and problem solving Makes decision based on the good of the group EX: Hospital CEO has an open door policy and always takes a majority vote on decisions. Laissez-faire Leader From French phrase “let it be” Informal type of leader Strives for minimal rules Allows individuals to function independently Usually avoids making decisions EX: A Captain overseeing Paramedic students has them working independently without a definite goal. Some are looking through the ambulances learning where things are, some are washing and waxing the ambulance, etc. 1.05 Understand concepts of teamwork
