LEARNING GOALS UNDERSTAND WHY THE CHURCH DIVIDED INTO THE EAST AND THE WEST KNOW WHO MARTIN LUTHER WAS, AND WHAT HIS IMPACT ON THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH WAS UNDERSTAND KEY POINTS ABOUT EACH OF THE MAIN GROUPS THAT RESULTED AFTER THE PROTESTANT REFORMATION.

Groups and Institutions
Roman Catholic Church Western Church expanded its influence; Crusades “holy wars” were common The pope plays a central role Popes are considered to have papal infallibility which means that they are protected from error by God. In 1543, the church spent eighteen years at the Council of Trent affirming all of its basic teachings, which started the Catholic Reformation. This is where they identified the 7 sacraments and outlined the 3 destinations for the souls of the dead- heaven, hell and purgatory (a temporary state in which souls exist until they are cleansed of sin and can enter heaven.

Eastern Schism Church grew larger, conflict also grew
Pope was given authority, not everyone agreed Doctrine (policies) were also a source of conflict A schism (splitting) occurred, creating two sides: Eastern Orthodox and Western Church

Spread of much of Eastern Europe & Russia Predominant in Greece, Russia, Ukraine

2nd great division in the Church (500 years after the Eastern schism) Began in 1517 Common practices of the western Church were challenged There was a push for a simpler inner faith Lead by Martin Luther, the belief of faith alone being enough to save a person was the focus, not faith and works (rituals) He wrote his “Ninety-five theses” which outlined the practices and beliefs he rejected, and he posted it on a church door in Wittemberg.

PROTESTANT REFORMATION
With this new idea, people no longer required a priest to direct them He rejected such ideas as indulgences which were prayers or actions (giving money) that would free a person from spending time in purgatory. New Protestant Churches developed Quick summary video
