2. Collins Big Cat reading books
Reasons for purchasing:
Enhance children’s reading skills.
Offers the children more choice – 2 books per week rather than 1.
Matches up with the RWI book levels (Slightly more challenging)

3. Children not yet on a RWI book can still have a book to have a go at whilst at home.
Lilac – will help children’s language skills by discussing the pictures that are in the book.
Pink A – Will help children to practise trying to read a whole sentence.

Grapheme – the written letters.

6. We start by teaching children to blend words by using the green words.
We teach from Word time 1 – Word time 7 before heading onto Ditty books. This way it builds up a child’s confidence in blending first before having to read whole sentences. All children learn at their own pace and these children are ALL making progress in their reading!
Red words cannot be sounded out – children just have to learn these words.

7. How the RWI books work:
We read the book in school during our phonics sessions first. This builds up children’s fluency and offers us the chance to build comprehension and writing skills about the book.
Inside the book contains speed sounds for children to go through. Any that are circled means they will definitely be in the story.
Then you have the stories green and red words for the children to practise. There is also a mini introduction of the story to be read to the children. This can offer them the chance to make predictions about what they think might happen.
At the back are some questions about the story. This will help build comprehension so that children understand what they have read.
