Section 2 The Way Science Works p. 12
3
Know the steps to the scientific method
Objectives Know the steps to the scientific method Discern the importance of technology Analyze the procedures of experimental design
4
I. Science Skills A. Critical thinking- making observations and using logic to arrive at conclusions B. Scientific Method- series of steps followed to solve problems (not rigid rules, but a guideline) 1. Identify a problem(ask a question!) 2. Hypothesis- if/then format (If IV, then DV) 3. Experiment (See point C)
5
4. Collect Data (both quantitative and qualitative) Draw Conclusions
5. Theory (can be more formal, repeated experiments can lead to this) 6. RETEST- only a valid experiment if results can be repeated

C. Testing Hypotheses/Experimental Design
1. Control Group-do nothing for comparison 2. Controlled experiment- one in which only one variable can be changed at a time a. Variable- part of an experiment that can be changed b. Constant- a variable that is not changed in an experiment 3. Independent Variable (IV)- factor that you change in the experiment 4. Dependent Variable (DV)- the change that occurs because of the IV
10
5. Confounding Factor- variable that changed the experiment that you did not intend
6. Document results and procedures
