What is a moment and how can it help to move objects?
Moments Lessons 11 and 12/21 What is a moment and how can it help to move objects? Starter Look at the following slide and match the tool to the job.

3
Glossary Moment = The turning effect of a force
Pivot- the point about which an object turns when acted on by a force that makes it turn.
4
Moments
5
Moment = Force (N) x distance (m)
Look at the equation. What is the unit for a moment? Pivot or Fulcrum Effort
6
Well actually it’s…. Moment (Nm) = force (N) X
perpendicular distance from line of action to force of pivot Moment (Nm) = force (N) X For example; A 0.3 m long crow bar is used to life a box with a weight of 50N . What was the moment?
7
Tasks Higher- complete the worksheet and be prepared to move on.
Foundation – complete the worksheet
8
Higher Only Balancing Moments …
Look at this situation. What must be true about the moments on a stable seesaw?
9
Moment = force x distance
In equilibrium; The sum of the clockwise movement about the pivot The sum of the anti clockwise movement about the pivot. =
10
Which way will the seesaw tip? Why?
11
How could you balance the elephant and the bunny.
Bunny weighs 10 N Elephant weighs 100N Length of seesaw = 20m (10 m either side of piviot)
12
Which way will the seesaw tip? Why?
10m from pivot 1m
13
A seesaw in equilibrium.
80x3.75 = 50x6
14
Practise the questions
