1821 – Stephen Austin settles Americans in the Mexican Territory of Texas (Mexican land grant) By 1830 – 3000 people populated the territory By 1835 – over 35,000 settlers had invaded the space

2 Mexico tried to slow them down – - imposed taxes
- stationed troops among them This reminded Americans of the occupation of the British (AR) 1835 – Texans revolt against the Mexicans and drive them from the area March 2, 1836 = Texas declares their independence from Mexico

4 Remember the Alamo!!! General Santa Anna leads the Mexican Army into Texas to crush the settlers The Battle of the Alamo! 4000 Mexican troops surrounded an old abandoned mission with 187 American defenders - James Bowie - Davy Crockett

5 All 187 American would be killed, but not before killing 1544 of Santa Anna’s men
The Alamo – Still in down town San Antonio, Texas! America’s new battle cry would be “Remember the Alamo”

7 The Republic of Texas was born
Battle of Goliad – American soldiers are slaughtered after surrendering Sam Houston leads the charge April 21,1834 Battle of San Jacinto Houston’s army forces Santa Anna’s troops to retreat from the Texas Territory The Republic of Texas was born

8 Texas immediately applied for statehood
Concern over its size – Would it break into smaller states (slave vs free) It already had slavery Texas would wait several years to become a state fueling the resentment over the slavery issue and a cause for the Civil War

9 Annexation of Texas 1840’s – Texas is annexed by America to offer it protection 1846 – 1848 US – Mexican War Santa Anna returns to re-claim Mexican Territory Zachary Taylor leads American forces into Mexico and captures the capitol. American Army will defeat the Mexican Army

10 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
“We take nothing by conquest.... Thank God.” Ends the US- Mexican War Mexico ceded: -525,000 square miles of land -California, Utah and Nevada -Parts of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming We paid them $15 million 1853 – Gadsden Purchase - $10 million – We bought the rest of Arizona and New Mexico from Mexico
