1 DASD Explorer Training
2014

2 DASD Explorer “Collect DASD information and save into historical views”

3 Data Source Record Description RMF 70 CPU Activity RMF 73
Channel – channel path activity RMF 74.1 Device – Front-end response times RMF 74.5 Cache - Activity inside the storage RMF 78.3 LCU – Hyper-PAV and LCU activity DCOLLECT “V” DASD occupation ** DASD configuration discovery

4 Historical views Target Table name Description CACHE History cacheHist
Storage Group and SSID activity: cache hits, response times CACHE Volume History cacheVolumes Volume level cache activity Channel CEC History chpCec CEC totals, zHPF activity Channel Lpar History chpLpar CHPID activity per LPAR Device History devHist Storage Group and SSID: SSCH, response times per LPAR Device Volume History devVolumes Volume level activity LCU History lcuHist Hyper-PAV and LCU activity LCU Config History cfgLcuHist Configuration matrix Volume Config History cfgVolHist Volume configuration matrix Volume History volHist Volume occupation

5 Cache Activity Activity inside the box (storage array)
Fields Storage Array Storage Group SSID Activity inside the box (storage array) The counters accounts the usage per all LPAR’s ¼ of Cache Volumes space

6 Cache Activity counters
Counters available: XRC = Asynchronous replication counters zHPF = Hiper FICON activity

7 Cache operations Cache operations:
%random read hits and %random read misses, %random writes, %sequential reads and %sequential writes

8 IOPS x Response time IO activity per hour of day: average, minimum, maximum and STDEV And average response time

9 Device Activity Front-end activity (LPAR view):
Fields SID Sysplex SystemName Storage Array Storage Group LCU Tag Unit Cylinders Front-end activity (LPAR view): I/O’s per second (IOPS) Response times: connected, disconnected, pending, CMR Queuing delays PAV activity (not Hyper-PAV)

10 Device Activity counters
Counters available:

11 Response time components
Connect, disconnect and pending time components vs IOPS

12 Channel Activity (LPAR)
Fields SID Sysplex SystemName CHPID CSSID Channel Acron Channel type Measure the activity on the channels: Number of read and writes MB/s transferred

13 Channel activity Channel activity: MB/s read and MB/s writes

14 CEC Channel Activity FICON and Hiper-FICON (zHPF)
Fields CEC name CHPID CSSID Channel Acron Channel type FICON and Hiper-FICON (zHPF) Total activity per CHPID

15 LCU Configuration Configuration history matrix:
Fields CEC name Sysplex SID System name LCU CHPID CSSID CU number Channel acron Channel type Storage Array Tag SSID Configuration history matrix: Built from RMF records

16 Volume Configuration Volume configuration matrix: Fields Volser SID
Sysplex System name Storage Array Storage Group Device number LCU Tag Unit Device type Unit type Cylinders Volume configuration matrix:

17 Config Explorer Crossing information on RMF records, we build explorers for each view:

18 Volume Allocation History
based on DCOLLECT “V” records Fields Volser Storage Group Storage Array Tag Unit Device type Manufacture Cylinders

19 DASD Discovery Interrogates the z/OS and build a DASD configuration

20 DASD Discovery Device information:
VOLSER Channel paths CDR information Space information DCOLLECT information “Build the DASD infra-structure from this information.”

21 Volume Identity Volume identity :
Identified by the Configuration Data Record (CDR) DEVNUM TAG VOLSER IBM DT Type number 002107 Model number 932 Manufacture IBM Plant 82 Serial number DT971 Tag 0100

22 Discovery communication
The DataLoader utility request the configuration

23 Discovery Views Logical view Historical MVS perspective: device number, LPAR, work... Physical view DASD device: capacity, space counters. Current view Current Current LPAR’s views “A DASD device (physical DASD) can be connected to many LPAR’s (MVS device)”

24 Info date and Last update
Historical views are builted based on the Info date and Last update fields: Info date Date and time of the information. Last update Last date and time the information was checked and remained unchanged.

25 Reference date Current view: Represent the current DASD configuration;
Just the must up-to-date information is kept; The reference date limit the view.

26 Logical view LPAR view: MVS perspective; Device history; Online
Storage Resident Shared System PAV Private PAV base Public PAV alias Demountable Cataloged Page SMS VOLSER Device type LPAR name Type num Device number Model num SMS storage group Manufacture Unit type Plant Cylinders Serial number

27 Physical view Storage view: Represent a DASD device;
The device information is shared by all LPAR’s; Installation capacity history; Duplicated volumes (same volser); VOLSER Manufacture Cylinders Plant Type num Serial number Model num Tag
