2 Main Idea Theodore Roosevelt used the power of the presidency to push for progressive reforms in business and in environmental policy

3 Roosevelt’s View of the Presidency
TAKING OFFICE: A progressive reformer New York Governor in 1898 Nominated for Vice President Became president in 1901 when President William McKinley was shot by anarchist Leon Czolgosz (CHAWL- gawsh). He was a hands on President, used “bully pulpit”

4 Coal Strike of 1902 Roosevelt prevented a coal miner’s strike through arbitration, marking the first time the federal government intervened in a strike to protect workers Compromise known as a “square deal”

5 The Square Deal Became Roosevelt’s 1904 campaign slogan and framework for his entire presidency Belief that the needs of workers, business, and consumers should be balanced Called for limiting the power of trusts, promoting public health and safety, and improving working conditions

Roosevelt believed that each generation had a duty to protect and conserve natural resources for future generations John Muir –wanted Yosemite protected and preserved-”Unfortuanately, God cannot save trees from fools, only the government can do that” Newlands Reclamation Act of 1902: government created irrigation project Gifford Pinchot: coined “conservation” 1905: U.S. Forest Service The Antiquities Act of 1906 created 18 national monuments during Roosevelt’s presidency
