1 Lesson Starter: answer in sentences
Where is bile produced and stored? Why is bile important?

2 Learning Intention To be able to label the pancreas in the digestive system To know the enzymes produced by the pancreas To carry out an experiment using lipase To be able to explain what lipase does

3 The Pancreas Behind the stomach
Surrounded by other organs: small intestine, liver, and spleen Spongy 6-10 inches long 2 main functions

4 The Pancreas ENDOCRINE Release HORMONES Insulin/Glucagon
Maintenance of blood sugar- crucial Diabetes

5 The Pancreas EXOCRINE Enzymes Amylase- Carbohydrates Trypsin- Protein
LIPASE- fats

6 Experiment Instructions Collect apparatus and put GOGGLES on
Into both test tubes add (roughly) 3cm of full cream milk and a few drops of bile Into one test tube add a few drops of lipase Place both test tubes in the water bath at 37°C Leave for 15 mins Add a few drops of universal indicator into both test tubes Observe Apparatus 2x test tube Full cream milk Bile Universal indicator Lipase

7 During Digestion Food enters stomach
Pancreatic juices released into pancreatic duct Joins bile duct Pancreatic juices and bile released into small intestine to aid digestion

8 Copy and complete The pancreas is located behind the_________.
It is a spongy organ about _____ inches in length. The pancreas controls blood sugar through the release of the two hormones; ________ and _________. It also produces enzymes which are involved in digestion. The enzymes are: ______, _______and _______.

9 Copy and complete The pancreas is located behind the stomach.
It is a spongy organ about 6-10 inches in length. The pancreas controls blood sugar through the release of the two hormones; INSULIN and GLUCAGON. It also produces enzymes which are involved in digestion. The enzymes are: TRYPSIN, AMYLASE and LIPASE.

10 Collect both your test tubes from the water bath
Observations Collect both your test tubes from the water bath What colour has the universal indicator turned? What does that tell you has been produced?

11 Fats and Lipase Fats= 1 glycerol + 3 fatty acids
Lipase speeds up breakdown Optimum temperature= 37°C

12 Answer Questions in sentences
Draw and label a fat molecule What is the effect of lipase on fat molecules?

13 Answers Draw and label a fat molecule
