1 LP 6 – Cold War Media Propaganda (and literature).
Please write down the LT and SC, then complete the DO NOW with your table. LT – I can analyze pro-Socialist, Communist and USSR media and propaganda. SC – I know I have hit the LT when I can explain how media and propaganda can persuade an audience to support/oppose a side in the Cold War. DO NOW – 3 minutes Make a rap/rhyme with parts of the definitions  of Capitalism, Communism and Socialism.

2 What are the big ‘isms’ of the Cold War?
Capitalism – Classes in society “Free Market” Private Property – all property is owned and controlled by individual people, businesses and corporations Socialism – belief in a society that is working towards creating a more equal society Property is owned and controlled by the state/government Taxes individuals to redistribute wealth from those with more to those with less Uses tax money for public projects (education, health, roads….) Communism – has never really happened – is supposed to be the last, best stage of development After a society has gone through capitalism, then socialism…its members are educated and rational enough to work in a society without an official government. There are no classes in society There is no private property Decisions are made democratically in a worker councils

3 Propaganda Review Quickly find your propaganda notes from Unit 5 – WW1 and WW2 Who are the audiences?  What are the goals?  What are some of the techniques? Let’s think about the Cold War – take some guesses Who would the possible audiences be for the propaganda? What would the specific goals of the propaganda? What are some techniques that might be used? (al Jazeera)

4 Day 1 - Pro-Socialism, Communism and USSR and Anti-Capitalism/US
As we watch the following videos, please take notes about what you think is going on – try to figure out the audience, goals, techniques and other methods used…. Animal Farm – book written by George Orwell – about socialism, communism and the Soviet Union Soviet Propaganda Cartoons and documentaries Animal Farm - Beginning to about 25 min (pro socialism) – 25 min (cartoon – American imperialists) (the bright future) (mr. wolf) – 10 minutes (the millionaire) – 10 minutes Quick Discussion – did this propaganda have any effect on you – how and why?

Do Now! All four steps – should take about 5 minutes!!! 1. Take your Proxy War Assignment and place it in the basket on the stool in the back of the classroom by the windows. 2. Take out your notes/chart from the last class period and review them. 3. Look at the LT and the SC on your notetaking sheet – talk to those around you about the learning target and success criterion – how are we doing? 4. Discuss the following question – how did examples from last period help to persuade someone to support socialism/communism or oppose capitalism? Use specific examples – you might also want to start writing these ideas on your note taking sheet. *******Prepare for some awesome Pro-US/Capitalism and Anti-Commit/USSR propaganda!!!

6 Day 2 - Pro-Capitalism and US (Anti Communism)
Red Dawn Rocky IV (the big lie) – 20 minutes Rocky IV - (training styles) – 8 minutes Make Mine Freedom - Why Vietnam – dept of defense – 30 min - CIA - (small town espionage) 10 min (school of assassins – latin America) HOMEWORK – Watch one or two of the videos and add notes to your chart.  Then write your response to the questions at the bottom of the notetaking chart!

7 Day 3 – Animal Farm and Final Propaganda Discussion – who won the Cold War propaganda battle?  Be prepared to argue both sides.  Do Now!  Take out your chart – review it and take Cold War Knowledge Quiz. Review Definition of Propaganda – what is propaganda?  why do people use it? Explain how RED DAWN and ROCKY IV are propaganda?  How are they both pro- capitalist/US and Anti-Communist/USSR?  Did you notice any propaganda techniques Sentence -  In RED DAWN or ROCKY IV, _____________________________ (describe CD's from the movie that were Pro Cap, Anti-cap, Pro-Comm/Social or Anti-Comm/Social).  This example of ______________________ could persuade ___________________ (name audience) because ____________________________ (explain how the example can persuade someone to support or oppose a side). In Mr. Quesinberry's class, Mr. Q used name calling by saying that Commies were  emotionless robots.  This example of anti-communism could convince his students to develop a negative view of Communists because of his position of authority and the use of "emotionless robots" could sway American's opinions because they are inherently opposed conformity.

8 Watch the rest of Animal Farm?  continue working on your chart!
After you watch it - In your table groups discuss the following questions:      How is Animal Farm pro-socialist?    How is Animal farm anti-communist/Stalin?      What techniques are used to try to convince people that one side is right and the other wrong?
