Purpose of Socialism Socialism aims to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor. The government taxes the wealthy and provides for the poor.

How does socialism work?
Government provides services that people need: health care, housing (for some), education—including college, aid to the poor and elderly In order to be able to pay for these services, it collects very high taxes (over 50% of income).

Utopian Socialism Robert Owen created utopian communities (or cooperative communities) Small agricultural communities—people worked common farm together Everyone contributed labor as they were able Everyone was taken care of
