Most of the medicinal properties of green tea are associated with the four polyphenolic catechins: epicatechin (EC), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin-3-gallate (ECG) and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). The antioxidant as well as the ROS scavenging properties of these catechins are attributed to the presence of phenolic hydroxyl groups on the B-ring in EC and EGC, and in the B- and D-rings of ECG and EGCG. 4 Figure 3 Role of green tea extract and catechin polyphenols on reproductive functions and cellular mechanism of action. The figure indicates the possible cellular mechanism of action of green tea catechins via interactions with proteins and/or lipids in the plasma membrane, as well as apoptotic markers. It is postulated that through such interactions the green tea catechins are capable of improving semen, oocyte and embryo quality, thereby bringing about reduction in associated pathologies in the male and the female.
