3 3. Geographic and Historical Notes
Dubois County is located in Southern Indiana. It is bordered by Martin and Daviess Counties to the north, Pike to the west, Warrick to the southwest, Spencer to the south, Perry to the southeast, Crawford to the east, and Orange County to the northeast. U.S. Highway 231 and State Highways 56 and 64 cross the county. Elevation is 500 to 750 feet. The landscape features oak and hickory trees. The eastern half of the topography slopes very steeply. The central area is quite flat. In the west there are steep slopes in the southwest and slight slopes in the northwest. The county pertains to the Kentucky and Indiana Sandstone and Shale Hills and Valleys land resource area. Dubois county is in the Central Time Zone and observes DST. Average daily temperatures are 18٥/34٥ in January and 62٥/85٥ in July. Annual precipitation is 37 and snowfall 32 inches. Typically the first freeze of the season occurs the between October 10-25, earliest in the northwest and latest in the southeast. The last freeze varies from around April 20-25, slightly earlier in the northwest and south. The growing season lasts about days. Agriculture activity is mainly in livestock and hay. About seventy percent of the land is farmland and about half of that is in commercial crops. Popcorn is a special crop. Livestock includes cattle/calves, milk cows, and hogs/pigs. Main natural resources include ball clay, coal and petroleum. crushed stone, petroleum, and over 90,000 acres of commercial forestland. Water resources include large lakes (Beaver Creek Lake, Huntingburg), the Patoka River, and the East fork of the White River. Communities include the cities of Jasper (county seat) and Huntingburg. Towns include Birdseye, Ferdinand, and Holland. Larger townships include Bainbridge, Ferdinand, and Patoka.
