One of Mark Twain’s purposes in writing The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was to make fun of a type of book written for children at that time. These books portrayed admirable boys who always worked hard, behaved themselves perfectly, made touching sacrifices for others, attended church willingly, studied hard, saved their pennies, and never played hooky from school.
