1 Questions we will discuss today... What are rational numbers?
Please log onto your computer and head to GOFO. Questions we will discuss today... What are rational numbers? How can you express a fraction as a decimal? How can you convert a decimal to a fraction?

2 Bellringer 8/13/18 Convert the decimal to a fraction in lowest terms WITHOUT using a calculator. 0.35

3 Bellringer 8/13/18 Convert the decimal to a fraction in lowest terms WITHOUT using a calculator. 0.35= = 7 20

4 Agenda Objective *Fraction & Decimal Investigation *Conversion Formula
*Matching Activity CCSS.MATH. CONTENT. 8.NS.A.1 I can change every repeating decimal into a rational number.

5 Vocabulary Terminating Decimal - a decimal number that ends
Repeating decimal -a decimal number that repeats one or multiple digits infinitely Vinculum - the bar that shows a repeated digit after the decimal point

6 Take 3 minutes and write the decimal
equivalent for as many fractions as you can WITHOUT a calculator.

7 Now use the calculator to complete the chart. Write repeating decimals
with the bar notation (called the vinculum). *What operation does the fraction bar indicate? How can we simply? 𝟒 𝟏𝟓 = ? ÷?

8

9 Discuss your results with your team.
Can you spot any patterns with repeating decimals?

10 Which denominators yield a Terminating decimal? Repeating

11 What about 7?

12 When the denominator is 7, the same six digits repeat.

13 What about denominator of 99?
Investigate denominators greater than 9-can you find any others that result in repeating decimals? What about denominator of 99? Primes?  multiples of 3?

14 IF DEMONINATOR IS 9, DIGIT REPEATS 99, TWO DIGITS REPEAT..
THE RULE OF 9’S IF DEMONINATOR IS 9, DIGIT REPEATS 99, TWO DIGITS REPEAT.. 41 99 32 99

21 Group Act. Matching You are now going to work together matching fraction and decimal cards. Take turns and talk out loud as you try to find  MATCH.  Each time you do this explain your thinking clearly and carefully.  SOME CARDS MAY HAVE MORE THAN ONE MATCH. Take out the equns.

22 Group Act. Matching Take out the equns.

23 Group Act. Matching Take out the equns.

24 Does = 1?

25 Write each as a fraction: 0. 3 2. 4. 90 Then write a TWEET about
Exit Ticket Write each as a fraction: Then write a TWEET about repeating decimals. (Only 140 characters.) Name on back of card

28 ~Students did not remember how to simply simple fractions.
Teacher Reflections ~Students did not remember how to simply simple fractions. ~Could not remember conversion process fraction to decimal  ~Some ss picked up on pattern of 9's quickly ~Did not get as far as expected due to student's non-retention ~Card sort-hints process of process of elimination look at repeating decimals ~Write T or R for decimals to see if it is terminating or repeating T think 10'syou can read its place value and demonstrating that repeating really continues infinitely on board visually on board.
