2 On seeing this apple, what is your response?
Please write one or two sentences responding to the orange in any way you choose. For example: What you see What it means to you Any questions it prompts in you The apple stays the same, everyone sees it differently Learning Objective: to distinguish between the various critical positions and to start to use them in evaluating a text

3 Critical position: Historical
I read historical and other relevant texts, alongside literary ones, in order to see more clearly the context in which literature was produced and to recover its history. I look at the ways these texts have been packaged and consumed in the present day. Take this critical position to model for students how to do next slide: history of apple, is it indigenous to UK, when did it start appearing in lit texts, what did it symbolise: Eve, apple-cheeked maidens, snow white Learning Objective: to distinguish between the various critical positions and to start to use them in evaluating a text

4 Read the Critical position on your desk
Spend some time discussing your understanding of what it means Revaluate the apple through this new “lens”. How useful are these ways of evaluating an apple? Did any interesting ideas emerge from using these different lenses? Learning Objective: to distinguish between the various critical positions and to start to use them in evaluating a text

5 Where the Wild Things Are
Learning Objective: to distinguish between the various critical positions and to start to use them in evaluating a text

6 Move to next table and apply the new critical position to this famous children’s book. Work as a group, but fill out the grid individually Questions to ask Patterns highlighted What the lens helps us to see What the lens marginalises Does something get lost? Is there anything of interest that we can take from this. Don’t forget language and form. Challenge change add Learning Objective: to distinguish between the various critical positions and to start to use them in evaluating a text

7 Plenary In your books, write a definition of the two critical positions you have used this lesson (without looking at your cards!) Learning Objective: to distinguish between the various critical positions and to start to use them in evaluating a text

8 Metaphor Examiners’ notes:
Students should consider how the metaphor/symbols are contributing to a particular meaning in a text Debate a viewpoint or opinion about the metaphors and what they contribute to the text DON’T simply identify the metaphors and leave it at that

9 Getting to grips with a difficult text
