2 BIOGRAPHY Jonathan Swift was born on November 30th, 1667 in Dublin, Ireland to Jonathan Swift and Abigail Erick. He was born into a poor family. His father died two months before he was born. Swift was bought up under the care of his uncle Godwin. He was educated at Kilkenny Grammar School and then Trinity College in Dublin. Received Bachelor's and Master’s degrees at Trinity College. He married Esther Stella Johnson in 1716. Johnson died on 1728. He died on October 19, 1745.

3 SWIFT’S MAIN THEMEs Simplicity and Directness
His writing style was simple and direct. He defined a good style as “proper words in proper places.” Clear, simple, uncomplicated sentence structure and shortness of language mark all his writings—essays, poems and novels. Satire Most of his books were satiric. (satire: the use of humour, irony or exaggeration to criticize people’s bad points)

4 SWIFT’S WORKS “Battle of the Books” written in 1679, published in 1704.(satire) “A Tale of a Tub” written in 1704.(satire) “Journal to Stella” written from (Personal feelings of Swift). “Cadenus and Vanessa” written in 1713. “On the Conduct of Allies” written in 1713.(satire) “Drapier’s Letters” written between 1724 and 1725. Gulliver’s Travels (1726), (MOST FAMOUS WORK) “A Modest Proposal” written in 1729 (most famous satiric work about the poverty in ireland) “Verses on the Death of Dr. Swift” written in 1739

5 GULLIVER’S TRAVELS Jonathan’s best fictional work
was published in 1726 The book contains four parts, each dealing with one particular voyage during which Gulliver meets with extraordinary adventures on some remote island after he has met with shipwreck of piracy of some other misfortune.
