What is World Food Day? World Food Day is celebrated on the16th October Its aim is to raise awareness and bring about action dedicated to tackling world hunger In Ireland it is championed by NGO’s such as Concern and Self Help Africa WDF relates to Sustainable Development Goal 2 Zero Hunger and SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production

How World Food Day and SDG’s link to CSPE?

What is sustainable development?
Sustainable development is improving the living standards of people throughout the world but without compromising the living standards of future generations “Enough, for all, forever.” As defined by Professor Charles Hopkins of York University, Canada. This idea is supported by the development of the SDG’s Image:

Climate Change: Unusual changes to a region’s climate due to the increase of CO2 levels in the atmosphere mainly caused by human activity Environmental degradation: The destruction of environmental resources and ecosystems e.g. land, crops Malnutrition: People not getting enough food or the right types of food for a health body Global Goals: Sustainable development Goals that hope to improve development of the world but without compromising future generations Marginalised groups: Groups of people living on the outskirts of society they are often vulnerable groups Keywords Defined Activity: In pairs compare your definition to the ones presented here.

SDG’s explained In September 2015 193 members of the United Nations
agreed to undertake the SDG’s. There are 17 SDG’s with 169 targets to be achieved throughout the global community by 2030. World Food Day is closely linked to SDG 2 and SDG 12

Here is an action you could take to eradicate world hunger
as set out by SDG 2: Don’t waste food. Eat leftovers or freeze extra food Here is an example of an action you could take to ensure sustainable consumption and production as set out by SDG 12: Buy second hand whenever you can Activity: Can you think of one action you can take as an individual or as a class to help promote World Food Day in your school that also brings in elements of SDG’s 2 and 12? Take Action!
