The Scientific Method Part 2
2
Scientific Method Problem Variable
Clearly defines what question you are looking to consider Must be specific enough to be able to test out the problem Something that can affect an event or situation Factors that can change in an experiment Example: I want whiter teeth. What brand of toothpaste will make teeth the most white?
3
Scientific Method Independent Variable Dependent Variable
The factor that is changed intentionally by the scientist (factor being tested, “the cause”) AKA: Manipulated Variable (In the example: different brands of toothpaste) Dependent Variable The factor that might be affected as a result of the independent variable ( “the effect”, what is being measured, the data you are collecting) AKA: Responding Variable (In the example: whiteness of teeth)
4
Scientific Method Constant(s) Control(s)
The variable (s) that must remain the same throughout the experiment. In the example: the type of toothbrush used must remain constant The group in the experiment used to compare the independent variable to. In the example: teeth brushed with no toothpaste
5
Scientific Method Hypothesis
An educated, testable statement about the relationship between two variables. In the example: If Crest Whitening is used, teeth will get whiter compared to Colgate and Aquafresh because Crest has bleach in it. Whiteness of teeth Type of toothpaste
