1 Notes on the following vocab terms:
Acids/Bases Notes on the following vocab terms: Acid Hydronium ion Base pH Indicator

2 1. Acid A substance that produces a hydronium ion when dissolved in water Any substance less than 7 on the pH scale Ex. Milk (lactic acid), citrus (citric acid) Acids react with bases to form neutral solution Can damage skin and eyes Conducts electricity in water

3 2. Hydronium ion A positively charged ion formed when an acid dissolves in water H3O+ Hydronium ions form when a hydrogen atom is added to a water molecule The higher the concentration, the more acidic a solution is

4 3. Base Substance that produces hydroxide ions when dissolved in water
Any substance greater than 7 on the pH scale Bases are the result of a hydrogen atom being removed from a water molecule (HO-) Lowers overall acidity when combined with acid Can damage skin and eyes Slippery when mixed with water Conducts electricity in water

5 4. pH An inverse measure of the concentration of hydronium ions in a solution The pH of a solution can only be measured if it includes water pH scale ranges from 0 – 14 < 7 is more acidic > 7 is more basic = 7 is neutral

6 5. Indicator Compound that changes color at different pH values when it reacts with acidic or basic solutions Ex. pH testing strips, pH meters Testing strips work by changing color in the presence of either an acid or a base
