1 Room 23 April 18-21, 2017 Language Arts Important Dates:
This week we reviewed main idea and practiced finding the main idea of different stories. We read How to Grow a Hyacinth, and learned all about hyacinths. Our vocabulary words we reviewed this week were: finished, seedling, roots Word Study This week we reviewed compound words. We learned and practiced compound words by taking two smaller words and turning them into one big word. We practiced adding and taking away letters to form new words. We reviewed our new word wall words. minus, picnic, demand, sunset, cannot, frozen Please practice these at home! Please make sure you are reviewing our phonics skills at home. Spelling is becoming much harder for some students. Important Dates: April 22nd: Sweetheart Dance April 26th: African Mask due April 28th: Arts Express Mask due Scholastic book orders due May 3rd: Field trip to Philadelphia Zoo Reminders Weekly reports to be signed and returned Monday. **Please make sure your child is reading at least 10-15 minutes every night, or at least some nights(!), either independently or with an adult! 2 Alternates for the week:
Social Studies We learned all about stereotypes and talked about the many stereotypes of Africa. For example, some people believe that all Africans live in villages and in mud huts, however we learned and looked at pictures of the many different homes that Africans live in. Science We started a new unit, Organisms! We learned that organisms are living things and that plants, animals, and bacteria are all living things. We sorted living things and non-living things. Students also looked at a list of objects and had to determine which of them were organisms and explain why they thought so. Math We continued working in chapters 13 & 17, Addition and Subtraction to 40 & 100. Regrouping is a difficult concept for some students, so please also practice this at home. Please practice addition facts to 20 with your child at home.
