1 The Mystery of the Trinity

2 The Mystery of the Trinity:
Confusion Controversy and Conflict Comfort!

3 Formulation; Three Persons in One Substance.
We worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity; Neither confounding the Persons; nor dividing the Substance. (Athanasian creed, ~500BC)

4 Q1. Is the Trinity a NT concept?

5 Three Snapshots of the Trinity:
Jesus' baptism Luke 3:21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

6 Three Snapshots of the Trinity:
The great Commission. Mt 28: 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

7 Three Snapshots of the Trinity:
The Benediction. 2 Cor 13:14  May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

8 Q2. Did Jesus claim to be God?

9 Jesus before the High Priest Mt 26:63-68,
62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”

10 64 “You have said so,” Jesus replied
64 “You have said so,” Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?” “He is worthy of death,” they answered.

11 Jesus promises the Spirit
Jesus promises the Spirit. Jn14:15-20,25,26 15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate (comforter, counsellor) to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. … 25 All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

12 Q3. Did the disciples teach the Trinity?

13 Peter; The Transfiguration, 2 Pet 1: For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 He received honour and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” 18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.

14 Peter; Pentecost. Acts 2:14-17, 32-33, 36.
14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: In the last das, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people…. 32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. .. 36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”

15 Peter; 1 Peter 3:15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord.

16 John; Jn 1:1-3, 14, 18. 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. … 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. 18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

17 Paul; Walk in step with the Spirit Gal 5: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

18 How then shall we live?

19 How then shall we live? Pray like this - "Our Father.. " But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

20 Benediction;  May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
