1 Consequences of the global Shift
LO: To understand the impacts of deindustrialization in Detroit, USA

2 History : In 1903, Henry Ford founded the Ford Motor Company. Ford's manufacturing—and those of automotive pioneers William C. Durant, the Dodge Brothers, Packard, and Walter Chrysler and General Motors established Detroit's status in the early 20th century as the world's automotive (car) capital

3 During the 1960s and 70s, competition from Japanese car manufacturers, the famous oil crisis and the increasing cost of domestic labour meant that many of the car companies lost revenue, which eventually led to the relocation and outsourcing of many of Detroit's car manufacturers. This began a period of deindustrialization in Detroit.

4 Depopulation and decline
As the car industry declined, unemployment increased, this caused people to migrate away from Detroit, creating a shrinking population and many negative impacts on the city.

5 The need for redevelopment in Detroit:
High Levels of unemployment Large number of derelict/old unused buildings in the CBD High concentration of poor ethnic segregation in the CBD (donut effect) High levels of anti social behavior and violence among inner city residents Old and deteriorating inner city infrastructure A brain drain effect

6 How has Detroit tried to redevelop?
