Unit 3 Vocabulary Prohibited- forbidden by law.
Driving drunk is prohibited. Compel- force somebody to do something. The football coach compels the players to practice hard. Conspicuous- obvious to the mind or eye. The burglar was conspicuously in his attempt to rob the bank. Successor- a person who inherits some title or office. The Vice President may be the President’s successor Fleeting-lasting for a markedly brief time. The cheerleader’s looks are fleeting.

Irrational- not consistent with or using reason. My friends plan to sneak out was completely irrational. Mimic- imitate, especially for satirical effect. The toddler tried to mimic his parent’s actions. Condemn-pronounce a punishment, as in a court of law. The judge condemned the killer to life in prison Languid- lacking spirit or liveliness. The concert was quite languid during the opening acts. Haphazard- marked by great carelessness. The teenager was driving down the road haphazardly, swerving across the lanes.

Avert- turn away or aside. The mother told her kids to avert their eyes during the scary movie Taut- pulled or drawn tight. The rope was secured when it became taut. Redemption- the act of purchasing back something previously sold. The traitor sought redemption for his crimes against the community. Solitude- a state of total isolation. When meditating it is best to do so in a place of solitude. Vindicate- show to be right by providing justification or proof. The attorney sought vindication for his case.

Vocation- the particular occupation for which you are trained. Jonas’ vocation is to be the Receiver of Memories. Fathom- come to understand. It was hard to fathom the trouble we would get in for stealing the money. Elusive- difficult to detect or grasp by the mind or analyze. The serial killer is elusive. Blatant- without any attempt at concealment; completely obvious. The referees were blatantly trying to cheat the other team. Cliché- a trite or obvious remark. It was quite clichéd that the preachers daughter would get in trouble.
