1 Elements from earth Section 1.4

2 Turn in lab questions from text!

3 Useful elements removed from Earth’s surface
Gold Copper Iron

4 Gold Panning Density Fools gold Gold Pyrite, “fool’s gold”

5 Copper and Electrolysis
Most elements in nature are found as compounds Most copper found in ores. Ores are rocks that contain metal or other economically useful material. In order to separate compounds, a chemical reaction must occur Electrolysis is often used to break apart copper compounds First, dissolve compound/ore in water to get a solution Next, run an electric current through electrodes (metal strips) in the solution. This will cause copper to attract to one electrode and the other material to attract to the other electrode.

6 Iron and Blast Furnace Iron also typically found in an ore in a compound of iron and oxygen To separate the iron, the ore is placed in a hot fire along with coke, a source of carbon. The carbon and oxygen react with each other, leaving iron behind. It is common to mix iron with other elements to get desired characteristics Ex Iron + Carbon= Steel (stronger than iron alone) Iron+Chromium+Nickle=Stainles s Steel (resists rust)

7 Big Ideas How do we extract gold, copper and iron from the Earth?

8 Vocabulary electrolysis electrode

9 Task Make a poster of the following common elements:
H, He, C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn, Br, Hg, Sn, Pb, and U. Include the element name, symbol and one interesting fact such as its importance, use or properties. You will need to memorize these for the test!
