PROPAGANDA

3 There are many, many types of propaganda techniques
There are many, many types of propaganda techniques. We will study only 6!

4 A technique is a way to do something
A technique is a way to do something. Different propaganda techniques are used depending on the audience and what is being “sold.”

5 Bandwagon This technique involves encouraging people to think or act in some way simply because other people are doing so. Abigail: …I go back to Jesus; I kiss His hand. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil! Betty: I saw George Jacobs with the Devil! I saw Goody Howe with the Devil!…I saw Martha Bellow with the Devil! … Abigail: I saw Goody Sibber with the Devil! Putnam: The marshal, I’ll call the marshal! Betty: I saw Alice Barrow with the Devil! Hale: Let the marshal bring irons! (From The Crucible by Arthur Miller) In this excerpt, Abigail Williams claims that she has seen many women with the devil, while she proposes this idea, suddenly all girls jump on this bandwagon and start following Abigail by accusing those women whom they dislike.

6 Plain Folks By using the plain-folks technique, speakers attempt to convince their audience that they, and their ideas or products, are relatable or usable by the “average Joe.”

7 Transfer Also known as association, this technique tries to make something look good/better than it is by showing it with an image or person that is respected or bad/worse than it is by showing it with an image or person that is disliked/distrusted, etc.

8 Glittering generalities/emotional appeal
Glittering generalities/emotional appeal A glittering generality (also called emotional appeal) uses phrases and words that are so closely associated with highly valued concepts and beliefs that people believe in it without evidence or support.

9 Fear plays on deep-seated fears; warns the audience that disaster will result if they do not follow a particular course of action.

10 Testimonial A famous person or figure endorses and supports (or is made to look as though they do) a product. It connects the famous person with that product.
