Cloud Types Cumulus Cirrus Stratus Cumulonimbus

2 Cumulus Clouds Cumulus clouds are puffy and look like pieces of floating cotton. They have flat bottoms and are low in the sky; about 1,000 feet. Cumulus clouds usually mean fair weather. They grow tall and rounded from a flat, wide base.

3 Cirrus Clouds Thin wisp-like strands also called “mare’s tail.”
They signal a change in weather in the next 24 hours. Form at altitudes above 8,000 feet! (plane exhaust, too)

4 Stratus Clouds Stratus means “layer” or “blanket.” They look like gray blankets. You see these clouds on a rainy or foggy day. They are very low lying to the ground.

5 Cumulonimbus Clouds Begin as cumulus clouds.
Warn us of severe thunderstorms with lightning and heavy rain. Form about 3,000-4,000 feet above the ground.
