Cloud Formation Clouds form when water vapor condenses on CONDENSATION NUCLEI. CONDENSATION NUCLEI- solid particles in the air that water can condense on. Examples: Smoke particles, ash, dust, pollen, pollutants

High altitude, made of ice crystals Look like feathers

Cumulus Clouds Indicate fair weather or approaching storms
Form at all altitudes To “heap upon” like piles of cotton balls.

Stratus Clouds Indicates fair weather or steady light rain and snow
Smooth, horizontal layers Low altitude clouds Strata= “to layer”

Fog Fog is a stratus cloud that forms on the ground or body of water when the surface is colder than air. Clears as ground is heated by sunlight.

Cumulonimbus Clouds Indicate thunderstorms NIMBUS means “rain”
