2 Objective To determine the figurative meaning of words and expressions.

What is the symbol for your shoe or clothing brand? What is the symbol of your favorite team?

4 What is symbolism? Symbol – an object, a person or a place that stands for something else. Literal is the obvious or normal meaning. Figurative is beyond the literal. Literal meaning – It’s a flower Figurative meaning – love and romance

5 Let’s try another one Symbols are used in professional sports all the time Literal meaning – A lion Figurative – Strong, powerful king of the jungle

6 “Hungry enough to eat a horse.”
For these three expressions we need to find the figurative meaning. “Hungry enough to eat a horse.” Figurative meaning- You are very hungry.

7 Try on your own: You will have 3 minutes to write what you think the figurative meaning of these phrases are. You will have 2 minutes to think pair share your answers with someone at your table.

8 Think-pair-share Look at the symbols in the link below. Work with a partner - write down the literal meaning of the symbol (what you actually see) and then the figurative meaning - what the symbol stands for. Symbol images powerpoint
