2. The Beginnings of Modernism
The modernist movement arose during the Industrial Revolution. As there was a rapid advance in technology, transportation, and manufacturing, there was a drastic change in the quality of life in American and European countries.
People became intrigued with the subconscious mind, dreams, and symbolism, and this soon translated into their art and literature.
Artists began to challenge the idea that art had to be depicted in a realistic manner, and experimented with different mediums, colors, and techniques to try to explain what could not be expressed through realism.
Writers wanted to break the traditional forms of writing and began experimenting with new forms of expression.

3. Modernism in the Visual Arts
Abstract: Artists strayed away from realistic depictions, instead they used symbolism and abstraction to convey meaning
Experimental: Color, shapes, and forms were used in a way that was unique to the art of that age, illustrating life and feeling in a way artists had not done prior
Expressive: Art in this movement typically spoke to the artist's beliefs and ideals, as well as sometimes providing political and social commentary

5. Literary Modernism
In the latter half of the 19th century, writers felt that the Victorian morality was incompatible with their way of life.
They wanted to break the traditional forms of writing and began experimenting with new forms of expression.
Industrialization and new political theory were responsible for the beginning desires to change their forms of expression.
The literature after WWI reflected disillusionment and fragmentation.

Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis
Gregor Samsa, who is a traveling salesman, wakes up to discovering that he is transformed into a large, insect-like creature.
The rest of the book illustrates Gregor's struggle to adjust to his new life and the harshness of his family.
Kafka address the frequent Modernist concern of the effects of societal alienation.
He also uses stream of consciousness to examine the complex thoughts of Gregor Samsa.

7. James Joyce’s Ulysses
Written in 1922, Ulysses marked a huge development in Modernist Literature.
The novel describes the events of one day in the life of three Dubliners.
The writing was lengthy and some parts were controversial, leading the book to be banned in several countries for years.
Stream of consciousness is prevalent throughout the book.
The writing is filled with thought fragments with the purpose of capturing the thoughts of characters.
