Point to the Word 1 image. 1. One word in the selection is reference. Say it with me: reference. A reference is something you can look to or use for information you need. When you need information on a topic, it’s a good idea to look for it in an encyclopedia first. Encyclopedias are a good reference. 2. En español, reference quiere decir “algo que se puede usar como guía o para encontrar información, una referencia.” Si buscas información sobre un tema, siempre es bueno consultar una enciclopedia primero. Las enciclopedias se pueden usar como referencia para muchos temas. 3. Reference in English and referencia in Spanish are cognates. They sound almost the same and mean the same thing in both languages. PARTNER TALK 4. Now let’s look at a picture that demonstrates the word reference. (Point to the boy using a dictionary.) This boy is using a dictionary. A dictionary is a reference book. A dictionary gives information about words and their meanings. 5. Talk with a partner about some references you have used to do a research project. Tell how you used each reference. (Examples include: encyclopedias, dictionaries, textbooks, biographies, almanacs, Internet sources) 6. Who are some people that can help you with reference information? What kind of information can they give you? (Examples include: librarians—book recommendations; tour guides—information about the place you are visiting) 7. Point to the Word 2 image. 1. Another word in the selection is disappointment. Say it with me: disappointment. Disappointment is the feeling of unhappiness you get when something doesn’t happen the way you hoped it would. You might feel disappointment if you tried out for a team and did not make it. 2. Then talk about what you could say to make the person feel better about each situation. 5. Point to the Word 3 image. 1. One word in the selection is annoyed. Say it with me: annoyed. Annoyed means “angry or irritated.” You might be annoyed with someone who is talking during a movie. 2. En español, annoyed quiere decir “molesto, fastidiado.” Tal vez te sientas fastidiado si alguien empieza a hablar durante una película. 3. Now let’s look at a picture that demonstrates the word annoyed. (Point to the woman.) This woman is annoyed. She feels angry and frustrated with the man because he is trying to talk to her while she is on the phone. PARTNER TALK 4. With your partner, talk about whether each of these things would annoy you. Point to the Word 4 image. 1. Another word in the selection is circular. Say it with me: circular. Something that is circular is shaped like a circle. A ring is circular. 2. En español, circular quiere decir “con la forma de un círculo, circular.” Un anillo es circular. 3. Circular in English and circular in Spanish are cognates. They sound almost the same and mean the same thing in both languages. 4. Now let’s look at a picture that demonstrates the word circular. (Point to the pan.) To pan for gold, you move the pan in a circular motion, or in circles. MOVEMENT 5. With your finger, trace a circular shape in the air. Now take out a sheet of paper and draw a picture of something circular, like a ring, a bracelet, or a bowl. Share your picture with the class. 6. Now get in a group of four. Hold hands and form a circular shape. Now move in a circular motion, like you are playing “Ring Around the Rosy.” Then return to your seat. 7. Point to the Word 5 image. 1. One word in the selection is outstretched. Say it with me: outstretched. Outstretched means “stretched to its full length.” The dog reached for the bone with an outstretched paw. 2. Pretend you are reaching up high to get something. Show me how you would try to grab it with an outstretched arm. 5. Now show me how you would welcome someone with outstretched arms. 6. Point to the Word 6 image. 1. Another word in the selection is conducted. Say it with me: conducted. Conducted means “led or directed.” The scientists conducted research to try to find a cure for the disease. 2. Now let’s look at a picture that demonstrates the word conducted. (Point to the man’s arm in the foreground.) This teacher conducted the school orchestra. 1. An Internet search is when you use a computer to look for information on the Internet. The Internet is a system that connects computers around the world. The Internet is filled with all different kinds of information. Say it with me: Internet search. An Internet search is one way to find information for a research report. 2. En español, Internet search quiere decir “búsqueda por la red o en Internet.” La red es un sistema que conecta las computadoras de todo el mundo. Tienes acceso a mucha información a través de la red. The search engine then finds websites with information about your topic. With your partner, choose a topic on which you would like to do an Internet search. Make a list of keywords you could use for your Internet search. Tell the class about the Internet search you would like to do. 5. What are some safety rules for doing Internet searches? Make a list with your partner. Then share your list with the class. (Examples include: knowing which sites you are allowed to visit, never giving personal information over the Internet) 6. 1. When you squat by something, you bend your knees and sit on your heels. Say it with me: squat by. If you are washing a car, you may squat by the tires in order to wash them. 2.
