Citing Textual Evidence
7th ELA
2
Citing evidence is CRUCIAL! (very very important)
It shows you really know what you are talking about because not only can you answer the question, but you can also back it up with supporting details!
3
C – Cite evidence from the text
When you need to write an answer that requires textual evidence, ACE it! A – Answer the question C – Cite evidence from the text E – Explain how the evidence supports your answer
4
A – Answer the question First, tell me your answer!
Always write it in a complete sentence (unless you are told otherwise) It is a good idea to get in the habit of restating the question This ensures you answered the right question in the right way! A – Answer the question
5
C – Cite evidence from the text
Next, support your answer with evidence from the text! This shows you actually read and understood what you read! Choose evidence that STRONGLY supports your answer You don’t want something weak or unrelated You can cite evidence in one of two ways: Directly – by writing a quote word for word from the text with quotation marks Indirectly – by paraphrasing (putting into your own words) what the author said C – Cite evidence from the text
6
Here are some sentence starters for citing evidence….
I should see one of these every time you cite evidence! On page _____… In paragraph _____… The author states… According to the text… An example from the text… I know because… Here are some sentence starters for citing evidence….

Finally, explain how the evidence you chose supports your answer!
This ensures the support you chose really matches! Elaborate and extend when necessary E – Explain!

Let me show you… Once there was a lady who lived in a green house. Everything in her house was green, including walls, floors, and furniture. One night when the green lady went to sleep, she was awakened by a knock at her door. A blue man was there, and he asked if the green lady had a room available for rent because his car broke down and all the repair shops were closed. So the green lady rented him a room. Then as she tried to go to sleep again, she was awakened by another knock. When she answered this time, a red man was there. He asked to rent a room because he was visiting town and all the hotels were full. She rented him a room. She tried to go to asleep again and was awakened one last time by a yellow man. He asked to rent a room because his wife kicked him out, and he had no where else to go. The green lady rented him her last empty room. The next morning for breakfast, the green lady announced she only had two types of cereal: Frosted Flakes and Rice Krispies. The blue man chose Frosted Flakes, the red man chose Rice Krispies, and the yellow man chose Frosted Flakes. The moral of this story is that more people like Frosted Flakes than Rice Krispies.
9
My response: Frosted Flakes are a more popular cereal than Rice Krispies. In paragraph 5, both the blue man and the yellow man chose Frosted Flakes over Rice Krispies. This shows that Frosted Flakes are more popular because out of three people, two people chose Frosted Flakes. The question: What type of cereal is more popular: Rice Krispies or Frosted Flakes?
