Movies were first introduced in the 1890s and were silent, black and white, and under a minute in length
Originally France and Italy produced many of the most popular movies. However, in WWI (the 1920’s), their productivity declined sharply and Hollywood became the global center for film production, producing as much as 82% of films worldwide
Sound was added to film in 1927, and much of the film from this era is referred to as “talkies,” highlighting the huge impact that sound had on the art form
