LC/LU statistical tables from available data
Proposal for harmonised national data collection (WG LC/LU )

Statistical tables on land cover/use
- Best available existing data - Separate tables One for land cover One for land use - Relatively high aggregation - Compatible with other classifications (FAO, NACE, INSPIRE…) - At NUTS3 level (the minimum mapping unit should be 0.25 ha as ref. scale is 1: ) - At 3 year intervals
5
Code Harmonization Project
From the LUCAS Survey, the combination of LCxLU can be derived For the statistical tables, only totals per LC or per LU are requested

Land cover
8
Land Cover Code Class name A Artificial land B Cropland C Wooded land
Shrubland E Grassland F Bareland, lichens, glaciers and permanent snow G Inland waters H Wetland L Land area (NUTS definition) = A+B+C+D+E+F+H T Total area (NUTS definition)=Land (L) + Inland waters (G)
9
A – Artificial land - Fine tuning needed in allocation of sealed vs. unsealed infrastructure to either A (artificial) or F (bare) - Compatibility with Copernicus High Resolution layers (HRL) Urban Atlas
10
Land Cover – Artificial land
Code Class name A Artificial land A10 Roofed built-up areas A20 Artificial non-built up areas A30 Other built-up areas
11
B - Cropland - Reuse data
- Data is to be obtained from the Annual Crop Statistics (ACS) and Farm Structure Survey (FSS) - Attention to be taken on the treatment of differences to land area and total area, as crop statistics cover only for utilized agricultural area (UAA) - Permanent grassland not part of UAA (J0000) expected to be collected under E - Fine tuning needed on how to deal with areas temporarily bare with agricultural use (e.g. part of a rotation)
12
Land Cover – Cropland Code Class name B Cropland [Detailed classes]
B Cropland [Detailed classes] Data available at ESTAT. Details to be collected by Eurostat Annual Crop Statistics and Farm Structure Survey Other land with crops Covers for differences in areas not under ACS or FSS
13
! C – Wooded land - Reuse data
- Data is to be obtained from Forest Statistics - Use FAO definitions(1) > AT! As different MMU applies - Other wooded land in FAO corresponds to LUCAS definitions of shrubland and grassland with trees - Positive indication on existence of detailed data was given in the Forest Working Group of OK for disaggregation into broadleaved/coniferous/mixed OK for data at NUTS3 level But problems with 3 year intervals (1)
14
Land Cover – Wooded land
Code Class name C Wooded land = CF + COLT + CnF + COLTnF Details to be collected by Eurostat Forest Statistics CF Forest (FAO) Available at ESTAT. FAO definition (area >0.5 ha, use forestry) CF10 of which Broadleaved forest (FAO) Not available at ESTAT CF20 of which Coniferous forest (FAO) CF30 of which Mixed forest (FAO) COLT Other land with tree cover (FAO) Not available at ESTAT, but part of FAO reporting. FAO definition (area >0.5 ha, with LU not forestry) CnF Forest (non FAO) Covers for differences in areas not under FAO definition ( ) COLTnF Other land with tree cover (non FAO)
15
D – Shrubland - Areas covered with more than 10% shrubs that do not belong to A, B nor C classes - Note compatibility with FAO as Other Wooded Land includes areas "with shrubs and no trees" and "areas with tree cover of 5-10%" - Grants results support the aggregation of D10+D20 as these seem to be difficult to collect
16
Land Cover – Shrubland Code Class name D
D Shrubland = OWLF + OWLnF (-GwT if available) + OWLnF Some details to be collected by Eurostat Forest Statistics (Other wooded land) OWLF Other wooded land (FAO) Available at ESTAT. Corresponds partly to LUCAS shrubland and LUCAS grassland with trees S of which shrubland GwT of which grassland with trees OWLnF Other wooded land (non FAO) Covers for differences in areas not under FAO definition OSwT OGwT
17
E – Grassland - Areas covered with more than 10% herbaceous vegetation that do not belong to A, B, C nor D classes - "grassland with trees" (5-10% tree cover) is part of Other Wooded Land (FAO) which is collected under D
18
Land Cover – Grassland Code Class name E Grassland
E Grassland Some details to be collected by Eurosatat Annual Crop Statistics or Farm Structure Survey of which Permanent grassland (J0000) Collected from ACS or FSS
19
F – Bareland, lichens, glaciers and permanent snow
! F – Bareland, lichens, glaciers and permanent snow - Areas covered with less than 10% vegetation cover and that do not belong to A, B, C, D nor E classes - Bare agricultural areas probably better placed under B - For compatibility with FAO and INSPIRE this class has to be disaggregated
20
Land Cover – Bareland Code Class name F
F Bareland, lichens, glaciers and permanent snow F10 Rocks and Stones INSPIRE and FAO consolidated bare F20 Sand INSPIRE and FAO unconsolidated bare F30 Lichens and Moss FAO primarily vegetated areas F50 Glaciers and permanent snow
21
G – Inland Waters - Always excluding the transitional water areas (not part of the NUTS definition): estuaries and lagoons
22
Land Cover – Inland waters
Code Class name G Inland waters Excludes transitional waters G10 Inland water bodies G20 Inland running water
23
! H – Wetland - Keeping compatibility with FAO
- In LUCAS "wet forest" is part of C, - In LUCAS "wet shrubland" is part of D… - Drop H – Wetland and instead collect under the respective vegetation section? Or…?
24
! Land Cover – Wetland 1 2 3 Code Class name C Woodland
C Woodland of which wet woodland D Shrubland of which wet shrubland E Grassland of which wet grassland F30 Lichens and Moss of which wet lichens and moss 1 Code Class name H Wetland of which wet woodland of which wet shrubland of which wet grassland of which wet lichens and moss 2 3 Code Class name L Land area of which wetland
25
Land Cover – Totals Code Class name L
L Land area (NUTS definition) = A+B+C+D+E+F+(H) T Total area (NUTS definition)=Land (L) + Inland waters (G)
