Birthdays and Theme Days
Arranged by room parent During your child’s birthday month, they will be invited to bring in a snack or treat to celebrate Do not feel you have to supply an entire party! If you choose to provide a snack, please remember it needs to be packaged with a nutrition/ingredients label A wonderful alternative to a snack, if you choose, is to donate a book to our classroom library for all to enjoy.

Math My goal in math this year is to have every student demonstrate that they understand the importance of math in their lives and how fundamental it is to their futures. Through technology, hands on activities, and group learning, the 6th grade students will be able to: Understand the inner workings of beginners algebra Numerical and algebraic expressions Equations, inequalities, and patterns Coordinate geometry Identify and work with rational numbers Fluently divide whole numbers and add/subtract/divide decimals Recognize common factors and multiples Practice ratio concepts Solve for area, surface area, and volume Display and summarize data

Science New Houghton Mifflin Harcourt: “Science Dimensions” textbook
Aligned with current New Jersey Learning Standards for Science grades 6-8 Content centered around science and engineering practices, and integrated with English Language Arts and Math concepts Goal for students: To develop deeper understanding of concepts while also practicing skills as they are applied in the real world Concepts we will be exploring this year include: Engineering and Design Cells and Growth Ecosystems Weather and Climate Space Systems Forces and Motion

Social Studies The focus of sixth grade Social Studies is world history. We will start with the study of the beginnings of human society: Paleolithic and Neolithic ages. From there we will study the four river civilizations. (Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and China) We will explore these civilizations through the use of simulations, art and Tech projects, Technology, and research, among other activities. In this way it is hoped that Social Studies will not be dry and irrelevant, but rather will instill a connection from the past to the present.
