5. Initial Commission Findings Global burden of disease data analysis demonstrates: Minimizing high disease risks in working age adults can improve the effectiveness of workplace health programs. Largest medical cost savings are associated with reducing cardiovascular disease risk factors. Disease prevention and health promotion are undervalued: NIH spends 2% on funding towards preventing chronic diseases. Health-contingent programs reasonable design may undermine efficacy if not appropriately implemented. Health promotion is often unaddressed in law and public policy education. Emerging Commission Recommendations (1) Look to the Evidence: Promoting health creates wealth Develop a method for assessing consequences of policy options and actions of workplace health programs that incorporates probable impact. Establish an approach that effectively assesses evidence given rapid technological innovation and societal change. Agriculture, education and urban design sectors can accelerate the positive impacts of health promotion Health impact assessment processes should address chronic disease risks when they are used in urban development. Agriculture policies need to explicitly meet the optimal nutrition needs of all within a sustainable development framework.
