2 The Vitality Institute Commission on Health Promotion and the Prevention of Chronic Disease in Working Age Americans Aim: Place the power of evidence-based prevention at the center of health care policies and actions in the US. Application of Findings Globally: Plans to apply findings and recommendations to other markets in 2014. Commission Forum Series: Hosting a series of Commission Forums across the US in 2013 & 2014 to convene leaders in key topic areas and to provide input into the Commission.

5 Initial Commission Findings Global burden of disease data analysis demonstrates: Minimizing high disease risks in working age adults can improve the effectiveness of workplace health programs. Largest medical cost savings are associated with reducing cardiovascular disease risk factors. Disease prevention and health promotion are undervalued: NIH spends 2% on funding towards preventing chronic diseases. Health-contingent programs reasonable design may undermine efficacy if not appropriately implemented. Health promotion is often unaddressed in law and public policy education. Advocate for the value of improved prevention for health, productivity and competitiveness in government and business. Stimulate development of a stronger organized collective voice for health promotion and disease prevention, including workplace wellness programs. Develop metrics for healthy workplaces to be incorporated into CSR indices and used by investors in evaluating buy/sell decisions of companies. Review criteria used to score decisions about health spending across government agencies to elevate the importance of health promotion and prevention.

8 Emerging Commission Recommendations (1) Look to the Evidence: Promoting health creates wealth Develop a method for assessing consequences of policy options and actions of workplace health programs that incorporates probable impact. Establish an approach that effectively assesses evidence given rapid technological innovation and societal change. Federal funding towards health promotion should be amplified to build the prevention evidence base Increase NIH funding towards disease prevention to better align with the current US burden of disease Amplify CDC funding for Prevention Research Centers, as they have demonstrated successes in scaling-up community-based programs EVIDENCEFEDERAL FUNDING Findings and recommendations are tentative and should not to be cited.

9 Emerging Commission Recommendations (2) Technological health innovations and behavioral economic approaches will encourage new ways of thinking Engage behavioral economists and use the optimal mix of incentives and design features when developing and introducing innovative new technologies. Integrate and draw upon concepts from behavioral economics in designing and implementing health promotion and disease prevention programs, particularly within private and public workplaces. Organizations should encourage healthy behaviors to increase business productivity and intellectual leadership Local organizations and employers should encourage efforts to improve community health at the county level TECHNOLOGY AND BEHAVIORAL ECONOMICS WORKPLACE Findings and recommendations are tentative and should not to be cited.

10 Emerging Commission Recommendations (3) Health promotion and prevention policies should be amplified and aligned through effective legislation Develop a similar National Institute for Clinical Excellence institution capable of assessing and reporting on best evidence- based practices and most effective and cost-effective health promotion and disease prevention measures. Agriculture, education and urban design sectors can accelerate the positive impacts of health promotion Health impact assessment processes should address chronic disease risks when they are used in urban development. Agriculture policies need to explicitly meet the optimal nutrition needs of all within a sustainable development framework.
