Classification of Matter
SN# 12 Physical Properties and Changes
2
The BIG Idea Matter has physical properties that can be changed by physical and chemical processes
3
Matter has PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Physical Properties are characteristics of a substance that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance. What are a few physical properties of matter? Color - Volume Shape - Density Size - Mass Texture
4
Physical Changes Physical Changes: a change in some physical property that does not result in the object changing into another substance.
5
Physical Changes Physical Change: NO new substance is formed.
These changes are easily reversible or temporary. All States of Matter Changes are physical changes
6
Physical Changes EXAMPLES Salt dissolving in water
Melting, Boiling, Freezing Mixing 2 solids Crushing Breaking Cutting
7
Classification of Matter
SN# 13 Chemical Properties and Changes
8
Matter has CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
Chemical Properties describe how substances can form new substances Can only be observed as a substance changes into something new.
9
Chemical Changes Chemical Change: occurs when atoms are rearranged to form a new substance with different properties. A NEW substance is formed. These changes are irreversible or permanent.
10
SIGNS OF A CHEMICAL CHANGE
Chemical Changes SIGNS OF A CHEMICAL CHANGE Heat Light Bubbles Odor Smoke
11
Chemical Changes Flammability: ability to burn
Reactivity: how easily a substance combines with another chemically EXAMPLES Digestion Respiration Burning Photosynthesis Decomposition
