1 Vocab Basketball!!! US History First 6 weeks

2 PEGS For each word your group will discuss it and come up with a definition. The groups with the best definition will get to shoot a basket for bonus points. For each word we define place it in one of the following categories…. Political (Government, Rights of Citizens) Economic (Money, Profit) Geographical (Land) Social (People, Culture, Education)

3 Transcontinental RR Railroad line constructed between 1863 and 1869 across the western US to connect the Pacific coast with the Eastern U.S. rail network on the Missouri River. Helped more people travel West!

4 Assimilation The blending or fusing of minority groups into the dominant society/getting rid of other cultural groups.

5 Homestead Act Were several laws that gave an applicant ownership of land in the western territories, typically called a "homestead", at little or no cost. This originally consisted of 160 acres

6 Migration A number or body of persons or animals migrating/moving  together to a new territory to settle.

7 Agriculture Process of large scale farming and domesticating animals
The industrial revolution lead to the growth of farms and faster production of food.

8 Chinese Exclusion Act It was one of the most significant restrictions on free immigration in U.S. history, prohibiting all immigration of Chinese laborers.

9 Industrial Revolution
Transformation or change in society from small farms and handmade production to large scale machine based production in factories.

10 Urbanization Movement of people to cities to work in factories.

11 Monopoly Exists when a specific person or enterprise is the only supplier of a particular commodity or good. They dominate the market and will typically raise prices.

12 Gold standard Is the former US monetary system in which the standard currency is based on a fixed quantity of gold.

13 Social Classes Groups of people defined and categorized by their wealth and social status, they will often argue about political issues Low, Middle, Upper Class

14 Labor Unions Organizations formed by workers so they can negotiate better pay and contracts

15 Entrepreneurs People who start their own businesses and assume financial risk if it fails

16 Capital (Hint: not a city)
Money used to invest or start new businesses

17 Capitalism is an economic system in which trade, industry, and the means of production are largely or entirely privately owned and operated for profit. Central characteristics of capitalism include capital accumulation, competitive markets and wage labor.
