1 Learning Objectives To make observations about lenses of differing shapes To become familiar with the terminology of lenses

2 Lenora Lens says: Obtain one of each lens type
Make as many observations as you can about The lenses themselves What you see through the lens What happens to the light when it passes through the lens Which lens is diverging and which lens is converging?

3 Lenses and the Formation of Images
Chapter 13 Page 551

4 What is a lens? An optical device which transmits and refracts light
Our eye has a lens behind the pupil There are two basic lens shapes, converging and diverging (sound familiar?)

5

6 Converging Lenses Parallel light rays converge at the principal focus (F) after refracting through this lens This lens is thickest in the middle and thinnest at the edges

7 Note: light rays refract twice: entering the lens and exiting the lens
Direction of light

8 Diverging Lenses Parallel light rays diverge after refraction from the lens This lens is thickest at the edges and thinnest in the middle

9 Note: light rays refract twice: entering the lens and exiting the lens
Direction of light

10 Simplifying the Path of Light
The actual path of light shows two refractions.

11 Simplifying the Path of Light

12 Simplifying the Path of Light
Ray diagrams can be drawn with only one refraction, drawn from a vertical line through the middle of the lens

13 Terminology – Converging Lens
Optical Centre the point at the exact centre of the lens Principal focus (F) the point on the principal axis where parallel light rays converge after refraction Found on the opposite side of the lens as the incident rays A secondary focus is found on the same side of the lens as the incident rays

14 Terminology – Converging Lens
F

15 Terminology – Diverging Lens
Optical Centre Same as for converging lens Principal Focus: The point where diverging rays would meet if projected back towards incoming rays Found on the same side of the lens as the incoming rays Secondary focus is on opposite side as incoming rays

16 Terminology – Diverging Lens

17 Now Focus on This...... Page 553, # 1 - 6
