They weren’t playing football.

Was she playing fotball when I called?
Yes, I was. / No, I wasn’t.

4. PAST SIMPLE or CONTINUOUS?
Use the past simple for a completed action in the past.
I bought a computer last week.
Use the past continuous for an action in progress before or at the time of the past simple action.
I was sleeping when I heard a noise.
