PAST CONTINUOUS WAS / WERE + VERB + ING

USE We use the past continuous to describe an action in progress at a specific moment in the past. I was sleeping when the phone rang. Last Friday I was doing my homework.

FORM + I was staying with a friend when the fire started.
You were sleeping when I called. - She wasn’t doing her homework when I arrived. They weren’t playing football. ? Where were you going? Was she playing fotball when I called? Yes, I was. / No, I wasn’t.

PAST SIMPLE or CONTINUOUS?
Use the past simple for a completed action in the past. I bought a computer last week. Use the past continuous for an action in progress before or at the time of the past simple action. I was sleeping when I heard a noise.

Complete the sentences with past simple or past continuous.
What ______________ (you / do) when I ______________ (call) you last night? I ______________ (sit) in a café when you ______________ (call). When you ______________ (arrive) at the party, who ______________ (be) there? Susie ______________ (watch) a film when she ______________ (hear) the noise.
