Declaration of Independence → established the United States of America American Revolution → independence is won and recognized worldwide Articles of Confederation → first national government of the U.S.A. Main idea: Powerful states with a weak central government We don’t want another king! Replaced by the Constitution in 1789

How a territory becomes a state: Territory reaches a population of 5,000 free white males Form a bicameral legislature Elect a delegate to the U.S. Congress (no vote) Population of 60,000 – territory can apply for statehood Submit a constitution to Congress Enter Union
