4. Why colonise Virginia? Political Economic
Provided England with a base to attack Spain in the new world – close enough to Florida and the Caribbean
To provide the roots of an empire – which later does developed during the 17th and 18th Century
England hoped to rival the overseas empire of Spain and undermine its influence in the New World
New markets to trade were needed, just relying on Antwerp in the Netherlands was unreliable
