During this lesson, you are going to analyse how warfare had changed over a 60 year period and attempt to answer the question:

4 How had warfare changed by the 20th century?

The Crimean War In order to gain an understanding on how World War One was different, we must first gain an understanding of how warfare was fought earlier in history. The Crimean War was fought between 1853 and Sixty-one years before the start of World War One. During the first part of this lesson, you should try to gain as much information as possible on the type of warfare used during The Crimean War.

7 Task: Using the images, you should now try to discover as much as possible about The Crimean War, Look at the pictures and try to identify as many things as possible. E.g. What do the uniforms look like? What weapons are being used? How are the battles being fought? You should then record the information you have found on the sheet provided.

8 You should now do the same with the images of World War One.
Task: You should now do the same with the images of World War One. Try to identify as many different aspects as possible. Once you have done this, you should then identify and similarities and differences you have found.

9 Key Question: Out of both sets of images – which set do you think is the most trustworthy? Have a discussion with your group – you must give a reason for your answer!

10 Task: We are now going to analyse and compare two iconic battles during each war. In pairs, read through the information on both battles. You should then start to identify and explain the difference between the two.

11 Create a mind map titled:
Task: Create a mind map titled: ‘How had warfare changed by the 20th Century?’ Using the information on both battles you should provide examples on how far war had changed. E.G Number fought in each battle – World War One used much bigger armies than the Crimean War. A good answer will provide evidence on the mind map to support judgementa!

12 How had warfare changed by the 20th Century?
You are able to identify key features in both periods. ‘During the Crimean War soldiers wore brightly coloured clothing’. All You are able to explain how technology, tactics, weaponry, duration of battle, size of armies had changed between the two wars. You can provide specific examples. Most You are able to make a judgement on how much warfare had changed by the 20th century. Had warfare changed a great deal? A small amount? Had only changed slightly. You are able to support your judgement with reasons. Some
