Information: Letters for work experience Date:
Objectives Understand how to write a formal letter. Be able to construct a letter to send to employers for work experience. Note: Even if a family member / parent’s friend will get you the work placement easily, this is still practise for real life after school. This also covers s too.

Warm-up: shall need this for content of letter
What qualities are employers looking for in your opinion? (personality and physically) What kind of achievements would an employer be impressed by? (school or hobbies) Think, pair, share – 1 minute each step Think – write with partner – share with class

Notes – formal letter – writing this, not the answer
Your address top-right. Skip a line. Their address to the left. Skip a line. Date. You may have their full name/job title and department which will start their address. Question to discuss: Where might you send the letter? How do you find the address? (Where is a bad idea to send the letter?) (Small note: some people write their own name above the address. This can come across egotistical if you do or not confident if you don’t. Format varies)

Notes – opening Dear Mr. X/Ms. X or Sir/Madam,
(Indents optional in paragraphs, arguments for and against it.) Clear statement on your intentions and what dates you require. “I am writing to.....” Question to write answer to – think, pair, share Try and think of this from their perspective. Name 2-3 pros and cons of accepting someone's work experience request. What are they agreeing to? What do they get out of it?

Notes – opening Who are you (age, year, school) and why would you like to work where? Have you any connections to this place? Success depends on how they gauge your level of interest. (Show how much you want it). Question to discuss What are some good reasons to want to do work experience / internships in specific places? Name the places and benefits.

Notes – body List any experience you have, any qualities and achievements they might like and any interests you have that may be linked to the job. Researching the job online is helpful during this step. Question to write -solo Take a moment and write for yourself possible answers for the above list. We won’t force anyone to share if their embarrassed but volunteers are welcome. 5 minutes.

Notes – conclusion A polite and thankful ending. ‘I look forward to hearing from you in the near future’. Space Yours sincerely Put a line in __________(up and key beside 0) to write your signature on and below it type your name.
