Socialization In The Media
2
Media and Teens https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UntdGA7gH3Q
This video is from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. We chose this video because it is a good representation of how teens are portrayed in the media today. This video was made to teach kids to quit bossing their grandmas around and get outside, so this video is targeting teens. One thing that could be changed is the video could have shown a positive example of a healthy active teen rather than the negative example.
3
Media and Women https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwEPKTn4ies
This video portrays that women are always the ones keeping the house clean and making the kids clean their rooms. This focuses on how it is the women's job to clean up after the house We chose this clip as an example because “Febreze” is a popular cleaning product and has been around since the 1990s and it focuses on women constantly having to clean up after others.
4
Febreze Commercial This is an accurate representation of socialization because it shows how women are depicted in the media What's supposed to be learned? It is not just the woman's job to keep the house clean The woman of the house is not necessarily the maid Is this example effective? This video is an effective example of how the media forms ideas that the women are supposed to always clean up How could we make it more real? Children should clean up after themselves. The network should be promoting disciplined children. We would just show the kid spraying Febreze and leave the mom out.
5
Media and Men https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1Gst1-iDQ0
This video came from “Summer's Eve” brand cleansing wash We chose this video because it shows how men are shown in media This is a good example because it shows when a man uses a woman’s product they feel they have to go do a bunch of man stuff It is an effective representation of how men act This could be more realistic if he didn’t go to such extremes to become a man again
6
Media and Celebrities https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fK_zwl-lnmc
This clip is a commercial from “Beats” trying to portray the distracting factor the headphones have. According to CNN “Beats” headphones are the most popular headphones as of 2016 We chose this clip as an example of socialization because this proves how the media views celebrities as air heads.
7
Taylor vs Treadmill Commercial
What’s to be learned? “Beats” headphones are supposed to be so distracting that you will forget where you are Taylor Swift is a popular celebrity How can we make it more real? The network should be focusing on their headphones doing positive things instead of causing accidents Is this example effective? Yes because it proves the point that celebrities can sometimes be clueless because the context of their lives allows them to be
8
Media and Older Generations
This is a clip of a “Tide” commercial showing you vs. your parents in terms of everyday things Tide is a popular brand of detergent that claims to “know the best fabric” What’s supposed to be learned? It shows the similarities between teens now and earlier generations except for the way they clean their clothes We chose this clip as an example because it shows how older generations are more similar to today’s, despite what we usually think about them
9
Tide Commercial Is this example effective?
Yes because this video shows a positive correlation between older generations and today’s. It also shows a positive view the media How could we make it more real? We would change the commericial by focusing more on the “Tide” part of it because we feel like they briefly mentioned that. It would also be more realistic if there was more than one difference between the two generations.
10
Media and Homeless People
This example is from the movie Freedom Writers It’s a good example of socialization because it shows how you can never know exactly what someone is going through This part of the movie is showing that homeless people are all around us and we may never know it The media is targeting everyone to raise awareness about homelessness This is an effective example because it is a very popular movie and many people saw it One thing that could be changed is it could show him solving his problems and getting a home.
