Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) menduduki tangga keenam antara 95 universiti di dunia yang menyertai penarafan GreenMetric World University Ranking 2010 (Green Metric) anjuran Universitas Indonesia. Matlamat pengajian tinggi Malaysia
Menghasilkan graduan yang berpengetahuan dan kompeten dalam bidang pengajian serta berkemampuan untuk menggunakan pengetahuan kepada amalan. Graduan berinovatif, mempunyai kebolehan kognitif yang tinggi (berfikiran analitikal dan kritikal, berupaya menyelesaikan masalah dan penaakulan). AKREDITASI – establishment or revalidation of status, legitimacy of institution, program, module of study. AUDIT – process of checking to ensure specified practices and procedures are in place. PENILAIAN – measure the level of quality inputs, processes and sometime outputs. PEMANTAUAN STANDARD – monitor standards on programs by regulatory or professional bodies. TINJAUAN PELANGGAN – feedback from students, employees as indicators of service provision.

Kerangka Kelayakan Malaysia
MQF merupakan instrumen yang membangun dan mengklasifikasikan kelayakan berdasarkan satu set kriteria yang dipersetujui di peringkat kebangsaan dan ditanda aras dengan amalan antarabangsa dan menjelaskan tahap pembelajaran, hasil pembelajaran dan sistem kredit yang berasaskan beban pembelajaran pelajar. MQF menyediakan laluan-laluan pendidikan yang menghubungkaitkan kelayakan-kelayakan secara sistematik.

Lapan Tahap Kelayakan MQF
Terdapat lapan tahap kelayakan di dalam MQF yang mewakili tiga sektor pendidikan tinggi negara dan disokong oleh laluan pendidikan sepanjang hayat. (a) Sektor Kemahiran; (b) Sektor Vokasional dan Teknikal; (c) Sektor Akademik.

8 Tahap Kelayakan Tahap 1 hingga 3 adalah Sijil Kemahiran. Diploma dan Diploma Lanjutan berada di Tahap 4 dan 5. Ijazah Sarjana Muda berada pada Tahap 6. Ijazah Sarjana (Tahap 7). Ijazah Kedoktoran (Tahap 8).

Cabaran Pendidikan Tinggi
Sistem pengajian tinggi semasa memerlukan kepelbagaian program pengajian dan latihan untuk memastikan semua orang berpeluang menyertai pengajian tinggi tanpa kekangan kewangan. Cabaran bagi pengajian tinggi adalah untuk memastikan bahawa siswazah yang dihasilkan bukan sahaja cemerlang dalam akademiknya malahan juga menjadi siswazah yang bersedia untuk bersaing di pasaran kerja global termasuk di dalam syarikat Malaysia yang beroperasi di luar negara.

Cabaran Pendidikan Tinggi
Malaysia perlu menambah bilangan penyelidik, saintis dan jurutera. Peruntukan bagi aktiviti-aktiviti R&D di Malaysia masih lagi rendah jika dibandingkan dengan kebanyakan negara-negara maju. IPTA perlu menangani karenah birokrasi dalam universiti dan menyemak semula perundangan serta prosedur yang tidak relevan yang boleh menjejaskan prestasi. Usaha perlu dipergiat bagi menggalakkan lebih banyak institusi, badan pengiktirafan dan negara luar mengiktiraf program kursus dan IPT negara ini.

Kesimpulan Sistem pengajian tinggi di Malaysia dan di kebanyakan negara mengalami perubahan yang pesat, terutamanya bagi memenuhi tuntutan globalisasi terhadap peluasan akses pendidikan tertiari, keperluan untuk meningkatkan kualiti pengajaran dan pembelajaran, kepelbagaian penyampaian perkhidmatan, perubahan dalam kaedah pembiayaan dan pelaburan dalam pengajian tinggi.
