After the “Perry Crisis,” Japan would lose faith in the Shogun.
The Meiji Restoration is when the emperor (named Meiji) took power back from the shogun and became the ruler of Japan again.

Two groups were upset at the shogun after the unequal treaties of the Perry Crisis.

Many Samurai felt that the Shogun had betrayed Japan.
They were afraid the new influence of the West would destroy Japanese culture and erase the samurai’s position of power.

12. The Perry Crisis – Enterprising Daimyo
The Enterprising Daimyo were disappointed that Japan was not modernizing
But mostly they just already hated the Shogun.

Sonnō jōi
A rallying cry arose among the samurai who felt the shogun had forgotten his duty.

14. Bakumatsu
After the Harris Treaty came a period of intense political violence.
Assassinations and terrorism were performed by angry samurai.
The government’s second in command, Ii Naosuke was cut down at the gate to his own castle.

15. Bakumatsu After that the violence worsened.
It became so bad that government officials were being slain in broad daylight and their killers often walked free.
By 1867, it was clear the shogun was losing power.

16. Boshin War
Seeing that the samurai were revolting against the shogun, the Enterprising Daimyo joined the war.
A bloody one year civil war toppled the shogun and a new government arose.

17. The Meiji Restoration 1868
The new, young emperor removed the shogun from power and named himself the head of government.
In actuality, Japan was ruled by his cabinet— formed by the old enterprising Daimyo

18. The Meiji Restoration 1868-1912
Under Meiji’s rule, Japan would:
Industrialize rapidly
Modernize its army and navy
Push out western influence
Become an imperial power in East Asia
