A Solar System is Born

Solar system – planets and other celestial bodies that travel around a star.
Nebula – A very large cloud made of dust and gas. Mass – The measure of how much matter an object has. Gravity – the force of attraction between two objects (pulling). Pressure – the force of push created when two objects collide or come in contact.

Our Solar system

Eagle Nebula

Youngest planetary nebula known to scientists

The formation of a star

Formation of a solar system

Planetesimals – Tiny building blocks of planets.
Orbit – the path the Earth travels around the sun. Astronomical Unit (AU) – The average distance between the Earth and sun (93,000,000 miles or 150,000,000 km)

Planetesmial collision

Rotation – the spinning of an object on its axis

Revolution – the motion of an object as it orbits another body in space

Kepler’s First Law

Kepler’s second Law

Kepler’s Third Law The rule is this: in the Solar System, the orbital periods, squared, are proportional to the orbital semimajor axes, raised to the third power.

Gravity ALL objects attract each other with a force of gravitational attraction. Gravity is universal. This force of gravitational attraction is directly dependent upon the masses of both objects and the distance between them.

Newton’s Universal Law of Gravitation
