Physical & Chemical Changes
7-5.10
2
Physical Changes Chemical Changes
Do NOT change the composition of a substance, only the physical properties No new matter is formed Forms 1 or more new substances with new chemical and physical properties New matter is formed
3
Physical Changes Changes in the state of matter
Change in size or shape
4
Change in the state of matter
3 states of matter: solid, liquid, gas Melting Solid to a liquid Freezing Liquid to Solid Evaporating Liquid to Gas Condensation Gas to Liquid Sublimation Solid to gas OR gas to solid
5
Change in size or shape Cutting Tearing Stretching Wrinkling
Dissolving
6
Chemical Changes Change in color Change in temperature
Formation of a precipitate Formation of a gas
7
Change in color Apple turning brown Iron rusting Clothes when bleached
Marshmallows turning black when burned
8
Change in temperature When substances combine and temperature increases or decreases Ex: Wood burns to ash or gases & temperature increases
9
Formation of a precipitate
When solutions (liquids) are combined, they form a solid substance (precipitate)
10
Formation of a Gas When solid or liquid substances combine, they may form gas bubbles Ex: Baking soda & vinegar Alka seltzer & water
11
Review When NEW matter is formed Dissolving Sublimation
Change in color Ice melting Wood burning Gases being formed Precipitate
