New England Colonies Massachusetts Bay (later merged with Plymouth to become Massachusetts). Connecticut Rhode Island New Hampshire

New England Geography Mountains Thin and rocky soil Difficult to farm
Most farming was done to feed families (although most families barely had enough to eat) Boston Harbor and many other ports along the coastline.

New England Resources Thick woods- excellent timber for ships and homes Rich coastal waters- lots of fish and whales

Traded the timber for other items like food and clothing Industry Ship building Fishing

Came to America for religious freedom. Church was the CENTER of life.

Many large towns with schools, colleges, and shops. Many goods and services. Town meetings held for news and other information.

People lived differently in different areas. Some were farmers. Some were Artisans (skilled workers). Went to town, markets, stores, church,etc.

Some areas much like New England; others more like the south.
